Susan Sherard
Executive Director susanmclc@nc.rr.com | | Susan joined MCLC in 2006 as its Executive Director, after discovering MCLC through the Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy and training as a tutor. Susan’s job responsibilities range from managing the office to working with the Board of Directors to public relations and fundraising. Her favorite task is to assume the role of Queen of the Bee. Also an Episcopal priest, she has over 25 years of experience as a parish priest and church consultant. She was a founding staff member of Planned Parenthood of Springfield, IL, and has served on public library, rape crisis, food bank, emergency service and group home boards. She has a B.A. in Anthropology and Sociology; an M.A. in Liberal Arts; and a Master of Divinity Degree.

Program Director pammclc@nc.rr.com | | Pam has been with the Moore County Literacy Council for the past 12 years as the Program Director. Her job description includes oversight for all student services and volunteer training and supervision. She also created a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, through which MCLC donates a bookshelf and age appropriate books to each family moving into a new Habitat home. Prior to “retiring” to this area and joining the MCLC staff, she served as the Director of The Learning Styles Center at Erie 1 BOCES in New York State, where she also held the position of a Coordinator of Curriculum and Staff Development. In her early career she worked as a teacher of learning disabled students. She holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Education.

Program Specialist marianmclc@nc.rr.com | | Marian joined the staff in 2010, after serving as both a tutor and a Board of Directors member. As Program Assistant, she was trained in all areas of student services and volunteer training and supervision, after which she was promoted to Program Specialist. In addition to sharing general program responsibilities, she is also in charge of tutor resources and the Seven Lakes tutoring site. Marian has managed a number of adult education programs, including the University of Tennessee/Knoxville Adult Reading Academy Program, the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, and Boston’s St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She has a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Adult Education. Marian is actively involved in the Congregational Church of Pinehurst UCC and recently began taking painting lessons. | Paula Hill Seven Lakes Site Coordinator

| | Paula, our newest addition to the staff, assumed the role of Seven Lakes Tutoring Site Coordinator in May 2012. Her duties include setting up the tutoring program each Tuesday evening at St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church; facilitating the coming and going of students and tutors; welcoming and assessing new students; providing necessary resources; and working with program staff to monitor student assessment and progress. After studying Education at Indiana University, Paula joined Kemper Insurance Company and became the first female in North Carolina to hold the position of District Manager. A Certified Insurance Counselor, she taught continuing education for the Insurance Agents Association. Paula is on the Vestry as Outreach Chair at St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church and is a volunteer and board member for MANNA. She recently celebrated a significant birthday by going sky diving. |
