We teach basic life & literacy skills to Moore adults.
| | Moore County Literacy Council is a 501(c)(3) organization, formed in 1987 by a few committed individuals. The founders recognized the crippling effect of illiteracy on individuals, families and communities, and how teaching reading can open the universe for those who desire to grow and prosper.
Almost 80% of our funding comes from right here in Moore County, including grants from United Way and Moore County, both of which are funded by local citizens, and from our ever popular “Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy.” Our solid, generous base of supporters – individuals, service organizations, churches, businesses, local foundations - helps us achieve our vision, which is to reverse the debilitating consequences of adult illiteracy by offering free tutoring services to adults.
We assess each student’s ability and goals and create a learning plan designed to help each student succeed. We train volunteer tutors, who are matched with students, according to schedules and expressed needs, and we supervise and assess their work together. We are a volunteer based organization, supported by a small professional staff, pledged to make a difference in the lives of local families and communities. | |
